What is the Robin McKenzie Method for Treating Spinal Pain? Do Tampa Car Accident Lawyers Recommend this Treatment?

Robin McKenzie is a physical therapist out of New Zealand who discovered by accident a method for treating spinal injuries whether they result from Tampa car accidents or a slip and fall in Clearwater. His methods of treatment have been found by many to be a very cost effective and easy to implement way to treat spinal pain and injuries, and your healthcare provider or Tampa car accident attorney may recommend you seek this method of therapy.

Mr. McKenzie discovered in his clinic the effective use of extensions of the spine in treating spinal injuries. As he explains in his book, Seven Steps to a Pain‐Free Life, one day in the 1950s a patient visited him with significant back pain that had developed and gotten progressively worse over the previous several weeks. He instructed the patient to lie down in one of the examination rooms while he attended to other matters that would just take a minute. He was distracted by various things and didn’t get back to the patient for 5‐10 minutes. When he entered the examination room he was aghast to see that the previous therapist had raised the top end of the examination table and that the patient was lying face down on the table in a sort “V” shaped position. Not wanting to upset the patient, Robin McKenzie slowly brought the patient to his feet. At the time, having your body in extension mode [i.e. prone in a “V” shape] was thought to be the very worst position for the treatment of back pain. To his utter surprise, the patient said that he had felt better than he had in weeks. Mr. McKenzie told the patient that was enough “treatment” for the day and to come back the next day. Over the course of several days using similar treatments the patients back pain was totally resolved. Mr. McKenzie then went on for years to study this method as a way to quickly and inexpensively resolve lower back and eventually also neck pain.

Many people throughout the world have found relief through using Robin McKenzie's methods. This is true whether the back pain is result of normal degenerative processes or from a Tampa car accident. If you are in an auto accident and are not receiving benefits from your current medical treatment, you should discuss the Robin McKenzie method with your medical providers. If your provider is unwilling or not knowledgeable with regard to the Robin McKenzie method, it may be appropriate for you to purchase his book and consider trying his methods.

In general, the Robin McKenzie method is based upon the philosophy that back pain and neck pain result from a reversal of the lordosis that puts pressure on the discs that separate the spinal vertebra. That pressure changes the shape of the discs which puts pressure on the nerves surrounding the spinal cord and spinal column. Since “inversions” of the spine or failure to maintain the spinal lordosis is what causes the problem of back pain and injury according to Robin McKenzie, putting the lordosis back into the spine through specific extension exercises is the way to treat back injury and pain as well as prevent it from reoccurring in the future. These exercises take only a few minutes to perform and they can be done at home, the office, or even in the streets as you are going about your business whether in Tampa, Clearwater or St. Petersburg. Because of their ease of use and minimal training in order to build perform the exercises, it may make sense to consider the Robin McKenzie method as part of your treatment plan.
